The image above is a type of heat map known as a click map. It shows me where the visitors to my site clicked and how frequently. This heat map was provided through Hotjar.

Hotjar is an excellent tool for understanding user behavior. Often, we look at our own sites and think they are very intuitive. That is because we built them. However, the average visitor may navigate your site differently. Hotjar exposes user paths and frustrations you may be oblivious to.

Hotjar uses the version of your site at the time of implementation throughout the course of the heat map. Although this can cause some confusion, it is beneficial. This configuration allows you to contrast your site’s performance over time and through multiple changes. You can create new, separate heat maps to reflect your recent site changes.
